Group discussion tips


A group discussion begins with a natural, friendly international and extempore conversation amongst candidates on a current topic. The responses are noted down according to the requirements.
The main aim of conducting a group discussion is to let the candidates with leadership traits come forward and take the responsibility of further dealings. A group discussion is usually a combination of verbal and non-verbal responses which are taken note of and assessed accordingly. In a discussion the candidates may unanimously select a candidate to lead the discussion. Each candidate is given a chance to share his views, who may or may not support the topic being discussed.
Before the commencement of the discussion, the observer may inform the students about the procedure to be followed making sure that the participants are clear with all the instructions and the discussion begins.


This is the initial stage where the candidate is hesitant. There may be 3 reasons:-
(1) He may know the topic and be eager enough to commence the discussion.
(2) He may have some idea about the topic but is hesitant to begin.
(3) He may have no clue about the topic.
After a few minutes, the confident students begin the discussion and the others follow. There is a possibility the initiators may have a chance of selection. There is a possibility that more than one candidate would volunteer to lead the discussion and during this process many other qualities of the candidates are displayed.


Once the candidate gets over with the hesitation, there is no looking back. In general, the candidates express disagreement to whatever is said. The aggressive ones dominate where as the under confident candidates are forced to give up even if they try to participate.


By now the candidates have given all their points. The aggressive ones think that they have outshined others by contributing some good points where as the milder ones are optimistic.
The examiner observes the discussion and the performances unbiased. He analyses the responses critically and makes an assessment.


Write down your views about the topic is points, to refer to during the discussion.
Keep calm and think about all the positive energies which will help you take on the challenge.


One should put forward logical points, but if you do not have any, do not remain quiet as the purpose is to not only to measure knowledge but also communication skills.
If a candidate does not have a point, he may also add to another candidates point by stating some appropriate examples.
Mention the most important part of your points first and incase your point has already been talked about, summarise what was said and make some additions.
If you are not much aware of the topic, deliver what ever you have to say in a clear and logical manner.
Never jump to a conclusion without discussing the problem.


Do not rush to begin the discussion. Though it is believed that the one who begins a discussion wins but it is not true. The race to begin may turn ugly.
Try putting forward your point within the first four or five minutes of the discussion.
Try entering the discussion at least 3 to 4 times.
Take the opportunity to enter the discussion, the moment you find a gap between the speakers.


Do not show aggression.
Do not pin point at other participants.
Do not argue with other for the sake of it.
While stating your views, do not repeat anything that you are unsure about.
Talk about a statement, like it is your view point when unsure about the accuracy of the statement.
Speak confidently and with assertion.
Never speak along with a co-ordinate.

Sit straight with the back resting on the chair and joint feet.
Maintain an eye contact with fellow participants while speaking
Do not show disappointment or any other expression that may reflect dissatisfaction.
Keep cool and do not get nervous.


It is often believed that the more you speak the better are the chances of success, but it is not right all the time. Yes, you must speak but in such a way that people are bound to listen to the speaker. You must not speak along with other participants.
If you disagree with other participant’s viewpoints do not show offensive behavior instead it should be in a persuasive manner. Present your points in an effective manner.
Do not get moved or emotional while speaking instead be logical and reasonable and state facts.
Revise your points before speaking. Do not stop while speaking as it may portray lack of information. Do not steak to fast and avoid raising your tone beyond the threshold limit.
Work towards the topic rationally. Support your arguments with authentic facts and figures.
Avoid negative behaviour. Create a favorable impact on the group which may help us cross the bridge successfully.
