MAKING THE ARMED FORCES YOUR WAY OF LIFE:

THE SERVICE SELECTION BOARDS TODAY

Dear Friends,

A very warm Namaste and a resounding Jai Hind!

Having looked into the history of Service Selection Boards in India in my last post, let me briefly introduce you to the SSBs, as they stand today.

The Structure

A Service Selection Centre comprises more than one co-located Service Selection Board (SSB).  The organisation Tree of a typical SSB is shown below:

Testing Team.  The testing team comprises the following:

(i)         The Interviewing Officer, who is either the President (Major General/ Brigadier) or, the Deputy President (Colonel).

(ii)        Four Group Testing Officers, commonly known as GTOs (Lieutenant Colonel), including one Senior GTO, with each board.

(iii)       There may be four psychologists in each board, including one Technical Officer (Lieutenant Colonel). Thus, there may be a total of ten officers in one Selection Board.

SSB Locations

The locations of Service Selection Boards across India are enumerated in succeeding paragraphs, as a ready reckoner.

Selection Centre East.  This Selection Centre of Indian Army is located in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. It consists of five Service Selection Boards of Army, namely 11 SSB, 14 SSB, 18 SSB, 19 SSB and 34 SSB.

Selection Centre Central.  This Selection Centre is situated in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh and caters to both the Army and the Navy. It has three Service Selection Boards for Army, viz, 20 SSB, 21 SSB and 22 SSB and one for, Navy 33 SSB. It is located in Sultania Infantry Line, Bhopal.

Air Force Selection Board (AFSB).  AFSB is the Air Force Selection Board, exclusively for the Indian Air Force. There are four AFSBs, namely:

AFSB Dehradun: This is Number 1 Selection Board commonly known as 1 AFSB. It is situated in Clement Town, Dehradun.

AFSB Mysore: This is Number 2 Selection Board of IAF, commonly known as 2 AFSB, situated in CV Complex, Sidharth Nagar, Mysore.

AFSB Varanasi: This is Number 4 Selection Board of IAF, commonly known as 4 AFSB and is situated in Varanasi Cantt, Varanasi.

Naval Selection Board (NSB). NSB is the Navy Selection Board, exclusively for the Indian Navy. There are three NSBs, namely:

NSB Agrani.  Number one Naval Selection Board, commonly known as NSB Agrani, is situated in Coimbatore. It is exclusively for Navy and is located in INS Agrani, Red Fields Coimbatore.

NSB Visakhapatnam. The second Naval Selection Board is located at Visakhapatnam at Military Recruiting office, near Material organization. It is also exclusively for the Navy.

NSB Kolkata. The third Naval Selection Board is located at Kolkata at Diamond Harbour. This SSB is approximately 55Kms away from Kolkata Central. It also caters exclusively to the intake in the Navy.

We have now seen the history and current status of Service Selection Boards in India.  But, what happens in these SSBs? What is the process they follow to separate the wheat from the chaff?  That, dear friends, will be the theme of my next blog.

See you with more about the SSB process then.

Till then, Farewell. Stay home, stay safe!

JAI HIND!!
